Its been a minute since I've posted a YouTube video for you (more like years, not minutes but hey who's counting, right?)

This video is about my approach to eating and basically everything in my life.

The 80/20 rule aka the Pareto principle states that roughly 80% of the events come from 20% of the causes. It has been adopted in business management stating that 80% of profits come from 20% of clients/customers.

Interestingly enough it has been found true in several areas in life, for example 80% of the worlds wealth is in the hands of 20% of the worlds population.

I sort of use it for everything.

Health Living is Not All or Nothing

Today though, I am using it to layout how I approach eating and living a healthy lifestyle.

When wanting to change up our lifestyle, eat healthier, make better choices and lose weight we often feel like its all or nothing. We have this notion that it has to look a certian way. We have to be perfect and eat all the right foods all the time. This is why eating disorders like Othorexia are on the rise.

And if we eat foods on our forbidden "bad foods" list we often fall off the rails and go on a crazy binge.

This is the backfire of restriction and not having a balanced approach to eating. When we say we can not have something, like chips, donuts, fries ect. we all of a sudden have a hightened awareness for it.

The candy bar that we might not have eaten anyways now haunts our thoughts becasue "we cant have it." I mean, we all want what we can't have. Its basic human physcology.

The same thing can happen in our brains when we think about eating more plant based foods or going vegan.

For some people, (obviously not all) the thought of going vegan or plant based is so off putting that they will end up over doing it on the animal foods when they might have actually enjoyed some veggies too.

I don't personally eat meat but this is something I have heard from so many people. It doesn't matter what the food or drink is. The minute we say we can't have something we want it even more. Or the idea of absolute removal is off putting. And we all have a little rebel in us from time to time. At least I do.

Thats why the 80/20 approach is a freaking dream

If you have zero interest in never being 100% vegan or living a life where you cant also enjoy the foods you love then the 80/20 approach is really awesome. You get to have your cake and eat it to. And be heathy af.

I look at it two ways:

  1. 80% of the time eat insanely nutritive whole plant based foods. 20% indulge in whatever you want (fries, alcohol, cake)

  2. 80% be a whole foods plant based vegan. 20% if you like meat/chicken/fish/eggs enjoy them but strive for high quality as much as possible (grass fed/pasture raised/wild). This would also include the comfort foods too like ice cream ect.

The Low Down on the 80/20 Way

80% of the time strive for the highest quality, nutrient dense, life force giving foods. Essentially aim for high quality SOUL foods. SOUL stands for Seasonal, Organic, Unpressed, Local. Keep it simple with whole plant based foods or a vegan diet that does not include any of the processed stuff like oreos, french fries, fake meats, mac and cheese from the box ect. Prepare the food in such a way that the nutritional integrity is maintained. (need some ideas? Check out the recipes on my blog)

Reap the rewards of the vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and life force giving nature of these foods so you can combat oxidative stress, keep illness and disease at bay, slow the aging process and maintain or lose weight.

20% of time eat what you want. Allow yourself to have those other foods without guilt. Live your life and enjoy eating the things that you love because you are alive and life is meant to be lived fully.

Have it if you want it. If for you that means animal products then get down. And if you can it keep it organic, grass fed and pasture rasied.

If that means vegan ice cream grab an extra spoon for me because I want in on the action too. Wine? Yeah pour me glass and lets savor life together. I am not saying that all animal products are bad either, I am however suggesting that its best to keep em to 20% of the time if you are going to have them.

Just knowing that we can have these things if we want them takes away the obbsessive behavior that is often a result of all diets that we put ourselves on or keeps up from eating more plant based.

Its About Balance

This doesn't mean that during the 20% you go off the hinges and eat the entire cake or drink 13 shots whiskey.

Thats not healthy or balanced behavior. Thats binge behavior.

What I mean is that a couple meals during the week you can include the foods that fall into the 20% category for you. A glass or two of wine with dinner one night. A piece of cake for dessert the next. ect.

Its important to note that you don't want to indulge in your 20% all at once.

That will be hard on your blood sugar, digestive system, liver, energy and sleep patterns, you name it. And essentially is a binge if you think about it. So spread it out over the week so your system doesn't freak out.

I will never tell someone that in order to be healthy they can't eat cake, a burger or nachos or ice cream again.

In what world would that be ok? Certianly not the one I am living in.

This framework and approach is something I am so so passionate about and I use it in several areas. Like beauty products or buying used vs new clothing and furniture.

80% of the time take action in alignment with your goal and greater vision for your life and 20% of the time balance that sh*t out with whatever makes you feel like you can have it all. Because you can.
