As the year winds down I find myself in a constant state of reflection. 2017 was filled to the brim with education, self-discovery, triumph, hardships and loads of good food. It was also filled with innovations and discoveries in the world of health and wellness. The importance of our gut health hit mainstream, new science came out to support the importance of intermittent fasting (as long as you don’t have a disordered relationship with food) and organic products are popping up everywhere from airports to Walmarts. I also learned a lot about new supplements and their benefits.
I'll be the first to admit that I am a skeptic of most supplements. Part of the aversion is that we cannot supplement our way out of a poor diet, the industry in not regulated so quality control is minimal and if we can go right to the source of most nutrients, organic whole foods, why would we take an isolated source? All that being said after trying out a few this year when I was up against some issues including stress, anxiety, trouble sleeping, changes in skin apparence and serious problems focusing I thought I would give supplements another try. I really experienced benefits so my opinion softened a little...., well so much in fact that I actually swear by some now.
Here are the 5 supplements that I became obsessed with this year.
My anxiety is no secret and sometimes it keeps me up at night. After learning about CBD's proven efficacy to help reduce symptoms I figured I would give it a try. In my blog post talking about why I use it I shared about the benefits for a slew of other ailments including chronic pain, seizure disorder and insomnia. CBD is an antioxidant, neuroprotective, adaptogenic with serious healing properties. You can buy it on amazon but I like this brand which is available on their website or at Erewhon Market in LA. I also love chocolates and drinks made with it as well. I take it on an as needed basis and it really just chills me out. I can be a fast paced type A so this changed the game for me.
Magnesium is a master nutrient, playing a part of hundreds of enzymatic functions in the body. In contributes to muscle relaxation, blood flow throughout the body, supports energy, treats insomnia, relieves constipation, regulates levels of calcium, potassium and sodium and can help prevent migraine headaches. It really is a super star. Late last year and the beginning of this year were some of the most stressful and anxiety ridden of my life. I swear I aged myself a decade by the massive tidal wave of cortisol and adrenaline but magnesium saved me time and time again. I take CALM whenever I am feeling strung out and anxious, in the morning or at night. I notice that my sleep is so restful when taken in the evening.
The list of benefits and the science behind collagen is impressive. So impressive that after years of not having animal products other than eggs I decided to start trying it. Collagen is high in amino acids glutamine and glycine that help repair the gut wall and can help turn around leaky gut.
Although I do not have leaky gut, I want to make sure my gut lining is strong so I do not get it as my exposure to environmental toxins, chemicals and aging is continuing. It also helps with hair, skin and nail health. In a lot of ways these are a reflection of inner health and collagen helps provide lubrication and elasticity, the opposite of dry and brittle. Sign me up for that.
Lastly collagen supports our joints and connective tissues easing aches and pains, something I can really appreciate since I am on my feet a lot. I put it in my coffee every single morning and I use Vital Proteins. My hair, skin and nails are doing well considering I dye my hair, get gel manis, and drink alcohol almost weekly. It's part of my beauty insurance policy.
Bacopa is a brain boosting adaptogenic that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It has been used to treat a wide range of mental health related concerns including ADHD, Anxiety, Alzheimer’s, memory loss, epilepsy and stress.
That’s impressive right? Personally, it is mainly used to enhance my brain communication, support focus, attention, learning and memory because I am in the middle of writing two books, to be released in 2018 and creating an e-Course to be released in 2018 as well.
I have been reading books for research and sitting down for long periods of time to write. My younger self would have just taken Adderall to get hyper focused and productive but there are way too many side effects from that and it is highly toxic.
I am really excited to have found a supplement that has proven health benefits in a natural and safe way. I take this one in the morning after brushing my teeth before having any food on days when I really want to buckle down and get shit done.
This is not new to anyone but Vitamin C is an important antioxidant for our immune system, blood tissues, absorption of iron, bone and teeth health, wound healing but I use it mainly because it is necessary for the formation of collagen in the body. I know more about collagen, blah blah. What can I say I am about to be 30 and
I want to age gracefully and slowly. Some studies show that vitamin C can help prevent damage by UV rays and since I live in CA my face see’s UV rays almost every day of the year.
Although I mainly use it for healthy skin it has so many other benefits that it doesn't hurt to supplement with it. I mix 2 tsp of this vitamin C in water every morning and drink it before or simultaneously with my morning coffee (that has collagen in it too lol)
As I mentioned above, the supplement industry is not regulated so not all supplements are created equal. Companies can put whatever they want on the label of their products without having to prove efficacy or potency so I only recommend the products and companies I buy and have experienced benefits from with.
What supplements do you swear by? I would love to know!
